Hey guys,
This is my first post, but I've been following along for about six months, and with the weath of info. on this site you guys should probably be able to help me out. My temp gauge is pegging out which leads me to believe that the circut is going to ground somewhere. Before I tear the dash out I'm wondering if the sender I have isn't compatable with my gauge. I've got a 69 427 a/c car with a 72 454 installed in it. The heads are unknown and could be different from the block, i havent ran the numbers on them yet. When did the senders become incompatable with the 69 gauge cluster. Thanks for any info.
What happens when you pull the wire off the sender with the key in the on position? What happens when you ground the sender wire?
Do have an ohm meter and a test light to work with?
Hi DW,
What SHOULD happen when you do your 2 tests.
I'm always interested in learning how to trouble-shoot gauges.
Thanks a lot!!
Regards,
Alan
Hi Allan
With the key on and just unplugging the wire from the sender should send the temp gauge to full cold.Grounding the sensor wire should send the gauge to full hot.If the gauge will go extreme both ways that usually means the gauge and wiring is OK.(Not 100% but a good basic check.)
Temp gauge wire "falls" off = needle goes to cold
Oil gauge wire "falls" off = needle goes to high pressure
Fuel gauge wire "falls" off = needle goes to full tank
Does anyone notice a pattern here? Every time the wire "falls" off we have cool coolant temps, great oil pressure and a full tank of fuel.
Yea, actually now that I think about it the gauge stays pegged full hot whenever the ignition is on regardless of whether the sender is hooked up or grounded. Sounds like a short in the harness somewhere right?
