I am condemplating removing the A.I.R. from my 73 350 auto calif car.
Question, the tubes that project into the port area, do they have to be removed after the air manifold has been removed? Or will they eventually rattel loose and or possiblely burn up?
Is there any special do's and don't associated with removing the A.I.R.? There's nothing really wrong with it, it just looks butt-ugly and I need to do alot of PM work to the front of the engine anyway.
If you leave the tubes connected and "cap" the inlet fitting, it should be fine. The tubing may get plugged with carbon [eventually], since there is no airflow.....but that will cause no significant problem. And, doing it that way, you could hook it back up for show/sale if you want.
I bought a 76 with smog pump removed, run's just fine. It's terminated at the check valve with the vacuum line pluged to the intake. 76 has a single line to the exhaust port, don't know about 73. You are lucky anything pre 76 doesn't need smog.
Yes, here in CA, this car is exempt from smog inspection. If I remove the pump, I will also want to remove the air distribution manifolds that are attached to the exhaust manifolds. My concern is the tubes that are inserted into the exhaust manifolds.
The injector tubes can be left in, but they will be restriction in the exhaust gas flow. You can removed them by using an easy-out after soaking them will a penetrating oil.
I took the exhaust manifolds off and removed the tubes.
