Not to beat this up but putting an electric pump on the car with the mech pump still bolted to the block does nothing to prove the noise is not in the pump.
(This is one of the silly mistakes that the shop I referred to earlier made.)

Yes they did remove the mechanical pump and blocked the original location with a plate.Plumbed it for an electrical pump and test drove the car and the knock came back.
Here's the latest;they are willing to put a new 350 crate motor in the car and give me the motor that is currently in the car for $1,500. I get a new motor with a 12 month 12,000 mi. warranty.
I wish I had some pictures the car is really tight all other things considered. All replies appreciated.

That's a good deal for a crate engine installed, however I have my doubts about their competency. An engine knock is not that hard to find if you know how to look. Who knows, they might have even found the knock, something simple, and they are trying to get an extra bit of cash out of you.

My advice would be to think carefully before considering this and get them to disclose as much about the crate engine to you as possible. Sales receipts and warranty information.

I've been shopping this place for about 2yr's now, among others, and they seem to have the respect of there customers. I can completely walk away from this deal and they will refund all my money. If I do they will replace the motor and raise the selling price and make a better profit. I know because I have been approached by two other people myself about the car. I think they really do want to make it. Thanks.

I'm not saying completely pass if it's really a good deal and an attractive buy...I'm just saying protect yourself so that if something does go wrong you can get yourself out of it without any significant loss.

Yeah I here you and with these cars you have to have that kind of mindset. Thanks again for all your input and I will think it through.

After reading through all this , I wouldn't walk away from the car I would run from it , unless it is really priced to buy. We are in the process of rebuilding a motor in an 80.It just had th e regular oil leaking from every possible place. It still ran ok . ( Almost finished , shouts Thank You Lord Jesus!) Unless you buy it with the thought you very well might have to do the same thing and you don't mind pulling everything out and fixing it yourself, run from it. Like I have told my wife also, They make it look a lot easier on TV.

Why not just say you'll take the car "as is" if they knock off $3K. The way they want to work it, you're paying another $1500 and you know nothing about what they are putting in the car. Save the $3K and put in whatever you want!

I have a tendency to agree with 7T1VETTE, as the engine warms up, the oil temp goes up too and you lose a lot of viscoticy. It may be a lifter, that is collasping, or a weak valve spring.

There is a chance there is carbon build up on top of one of the cylinders. The carbon could cause knocking when the piston goes to TDC. To remove it if it exists, you would need to get the engine hot and pour some top end cleaner like Seafoam or possibly dribble water through the carb. If you use Seafoam or top end cleaner, leave it sit for 4 to 8 hours before starting it back up to let the chemicals work on the carbon. the start it up and run it hot again to blow out the carbon.
Otherwise it is mechanical.
