??? It was my understanding that this was not desirable due to the high rod ratio and necessarily high placement of the pin in the piston bringing it close to the ring grooves.

All the 383's we have built we used the 6 inch rods with zero problems and if your worried about spacer rings go with the Mahle pistons as they use no spacer rings.

Plus we buy our cranks for he 6 inch rods and can internally balance with no problem.

We have balance some cranks using the 5.7 rods and have to externaly balanc esome of those rotators. And the longer rod will free up some unwanted friction in the engine as well.

Longer rod is almost always more desireable.

I used Mahle pistons and 6" callies compstar H beams. Very little clearancing required, Piston weights were almost perfectly uniform as well as the rods. Stock Base circle cam works. A little more $ upfront but in my opinion well spent.

We have used quite a few of the Compstar cranks and rods and Mahle pistons and even a few sets of SRP sets of pistons.

The Mahle pistons power pack kits come with rings as well and I will have to say the Mahle pistons have tight ring lands compared to most pistons out there. And so far the pin bore clearanced has been right on and so far never had to hone any of them YET.
