Sounds like yours sorely needs a thorough chemical cleaning & flush of entire cooling system. Don't simply flush it, CLEAN it too. That rust collects in flues, jackets & passages; can/will cause eratic cooling. I dunno if still available at local GM dealer parts dept ... was under $10 ... heavy duty cleaner GM p/n 12346500 ... it works! Flush then clean then flush again then replace t'stat & cap.
Many posts here on cleaning cooling system; do a search if the above ain't sufficient.
That was suggested to me a week ago. I was going to wait till spring time to do it because of the outside temp. but I didn't think it would have effected the cooling that much. I learned something there. Thanks for the help guys. Sure it'll be fixed in no time.

Try and open the block plugs ... hex head pipe thread, one each side of block, midway front-to-back, just above oil pan gasket. They're often seized/rusted tight. Plugs out, poke a coathanger in there until water runs clear ... plugs back in ... then begin the flush-clean process.
Be prepared: when motor sits a long time & coolant/water rusty ... be prepared one or more freeze aka expansion plug will rust through & leak.
