I bought a 1969 with a 350/350 about two months ago.
Just today I replaced the carburetor's power valve and cleaned the metering block with compressed air. Now the car will idle on it's own, at least for now.
I notice a distinct "clicking" noise coming from the engine when at idle. The noise speeds up as I add gas until it's too rapid to detect any longer, but returns when I let the car return back to idle.
What is this clicking noise?
It's sort of a "tick" sound, and sounds maybe like a pressure release.
I'm relatively new to this obsession of maintaining an older car, so I appreciate all the help I can get.
most likely sticky lifter. there are additives to help free a stuck lifter but really only replacing them is the surest way to fix it.maybe look for a loose exhaust manifold or bad seals.
Thanks for the help. Hopefully I can get my car to the shop soon. I was planning on taking it in anyway to get the fuel tank and lines cleaned of some rust. It sat for a while after the previous owner died and some rust formed in the gas tank. From what I can see with a flashlight looking into the tank it doesn't seem very bad so hopefully the cleaning won't be too involved.

If you do not find an exhaust manifold leak, check that its not a worn pushrod from the fuel pump. I have had that more than once. Then check the rocker arms.
A year or so back I posted a similar question about a "clicking noise" in my 454. Someone sent me the following link. It didn't help fix the noise but sure as hell made me laugh.
My mechanical fuel pump was clicking awhile back (which sounded like it could have been from the motor). Since I was convinced it was coming from the pump I changed the fuel filter which was so old I couldn't remember how long it had been on the car. It was quicker than changing the pump and needed to be done anyway. When I started the car after doing this....., the clicking sound was gone. It's been several months and the sound has not returned.
