Hey guys, i need help fixing this annoying problem. My corvette's fan keeps on hitting its cover on the right side every time i turn the car on. The fan is closer to the right side than the left, but when i tried loosening and moving the fan cover farther to the right, i couldn't move it far enough. How can i fix this problem?
any help would be appreciated
I had the same problem years back with the 78 after ripping it all apart and putting all new junk in it. Loosened the shrough and tried moving it over but wouldn't go enough. The fan just touched it enough to almost sound like cards in a bicyle wheel.
Figuring it was the new motor mounts I put a spacer in the right hand side motor mount to push the motor away from the fan. At the time I couldn't find a quicker/better solution and that fixed it. I think the new motor mounts cause the motor to sit just a little off from original. Plus the car had been hit at one point and although no visible issues with the frame it could have been tweaked a bit.
I have the same problem on my 73, the fan is closer to the right side of the shroud than the left. I have been under the car several times to look at the mounts, but can find nothing that looks out of place. I did have the transmission replacer recently, is it possible thar the transmission tailshaft is not centered?
My '73 is slightly off center as well as just barely touches the shroud. Since I have to install a thermo fan clutch I'm also going to replace the fan from 17 1/2" to 17" diameter and 7 offset blades.

If the problem started after you had the transmission replaced, try loosening the trans mount bolts and move the rear mount to the right. That should slightly move the fan to the left. If that doesn't help, replace the mounts.
The engine torque will try to lift up on the left side of the engine making the right side of the fan hit the shroud. Mine did this when the left side mount broke. I could see the engine raise up on the left side when I revved up the engine--did't figure it out til I ran with the hood up.

Its only when you run without the hood that you realise how much the engine moves with power-on & power-off
after my 383 install I just allowed my fan to "clearance" the shroud.... no more rubbing...
not the correct answer or professional answer.. but mine doesn;t rub anymore hahaha
I never noticed it before replacing the trans, but it could have already been that way. Yhere are no marks on the shroud, so I'm pretty sure that the fan is not hitting it. I did look at the tailshaft this morning, it is already very close to the right side of the tunnel. probably suppose to be like that in order to make room for the parking brake pulley. So I guess I'm back to tired motor mounts.
As I stated, everything looks normal, I can't see anything that looks out of place. As soon as I get it running again, I will check the mounts by torqueing the engine. In any event I like the comments about the poly motor mounts and may replace the originals anyway. After all, most of this stuff is 35 years old and due.
