I'm putting the vette up on blocks for the winter. As I had this vette for only one year, I don't really know its complete maintenace history. The previous owner had the front end redone. I had the training arms rebuilt (Van Steel) and rear end last January... all is good there. Now I'm looking at the middle.
I want to replace the exhaust from the manifolds back. 2 1/2 with magnaflows.
I'm also looking at replacing the engine mounts... As I get on it, the fan rubs the shrout. I centered it however, the fan still rubs. Is there a way of checking the condition of the mounts?
Unless the fan is Gumby, the mounts are most likely bad. You think?
Last weekend, the trans was making a knocking noise as I got on it a little. A little attempt at a burnout at the local run. Only getting on it doed it make this noise. Any ideas of what this noise could be from?
Sounds like you need some mounts. The fan hitting the shroud is pretty classic sign of bad motor mounts.
When you jump on the gas real hard, the pinion in the differential is trying to "climb" the ring gear in the back. The other end of that is that it's also pushing down on the back of the tranny. If the trans mount is soft, very possibly the driveshaft yoke is hitting on the crossmember at the back end of the tranny.
It does sound like you need new motor mounts. The reason the fan hits the shroud is that the engine block tries to spin in the opposite direction that the crankshaft is turning. Its lifting up on the drivers side.
Thanks for the info; I took it out for the last drive of the year this afternoon..... The weather guys are saying a solid week a rain here in Sacramento. Up on blocks it goes!
