I just finished modifying my LS1's wiring harness and I'm ready to wrap it back up. The old harness was in rough shape with places where the tape had overheated and cracked. What's the best tape to use for wrapping engine compartment wire harnesses and where can I find it? thanks guys!
Don't use electrical tape, the goo will be everywhere.
Check Ecklers, I think that is where I got the wire harness tape (without any adhesive). Eastwood would be another place to check.
The tape that's been mentioned is really pretty neat, if you stretch it slightly while you're wrapping the wires, it actually bonds to itself until you try to unwrap it.
Plus, for whatever reason it seems relatively 'cheap' compared to most Corvette parts!
Regards,
Alan

This type of tape that Alan mentions is called "self-vulcanizing" tape. You can get it at Lowes or Home Depot in the electrical section. It's just a stretchy rubber tape that "vulcanizes" together to form a water tight bond. One use for it is to finish splices on underground electric cable but I think it is a great wire wrap. Don't know about its ability to withstand engine heat but being rubber I would think it would do pretty well. It's not too hard to get off but you do have to cut it off so it can't be re-used. Cheap enough though not to matter.
Hi DC,
The tape I was talking about is the regular shiny black, unsticky, tape many of the vendors sell. It does 'adhere' to itself if you stretch it but not as well as what you seem to be describing.
Don't want to cause any confusion.

If you use zip ties on the loose wires it can be made to fit in and around objects. Can just about get the wires to go vertical. Since the wiring is under the dash its not seen and now sits high up under the dash.

Hey Alan,
My bad on the assumption - agree about not wanting to cause any confusion.
If you guys have never used the tape I described, you might want to pick some up. I've found a ton of uses for it. It makes for a grippy surface when attached to hammer and other tool handles, seals electrical connections well (I use some dielectric grease on the connection before sealing to prevent corrosion), bicycle handle bar tape, repairs holes in cooling system hoses, wire wrap, replacement for wire ties, etc. It's now a regular part of my repair kit.
