Default Engine pull checklist

My 68 bigblock has been sadly neglected for the last few years, but I'm finally getting motivated to get moving again. Waaaaaaay back two or three years ago when I was a regular lurker around here, I saw a nice, ~complete checklist for pulling the engine preparatory for rebuild and engine bay work. I have the shop manual, but would appreciate it if someone could direct me to a link where such a checklist resides on this forum (I still never seem to have much luck with the search function )

Thanks!

-Doc

Hi Doc,
If you end up looking for a book, HPBOOKS, HOW TO REBUILD YOUR SMALL/BIG BLOCK CHEVY, by David Vizard, has some thorough information about getting it out. The larger bookstores seem to always have it in their Transportation/Automotive section.
Regards,
Alan

There are several books out there but i'm getting old and forgetful. A camcorder with your own narration works great so theres no extra bolts or parts left when your done. Those little ones are great because you can download it to your computer and make a DVD or CD.

Default Scrub-clean-flush coolant system

SCRUB-CLEAN-FLUSH COOLANT SYSTEM

Scrub inside of entire cooling SYSTEM. Use an aggressive strong cleaner not simply a wimpy flush solution.

BUT ... If you're gonna BOTH ... get a new rad ... & have block cleaned at machine shop ... then don't bother w/ above.

I usually do it in this order.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Drain the coolant

Pull the hood.

Disconnect the radiator and heater hoses.

Disconnect the fuel lines and plug them.

Pull the carb.

Remove the fan.

Remove the distributor.

Get under the car.

Disconnect the exhaust pipes from the manifolds.

Remove the starter wiring and ground cable.

Unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate or trans from bellhousing.

Unbolt the motor mounts.

Pull the left front wheel and position the hoist on the left side of the car.

Slide a floor jack under the tranny
Bolt up your chain or leveler and start raising the motor. Go slow, you always forget to remove something. Its good to have a big pry bar as well to help pop the mounts free.

The less stuff you have on the motor, the easier it is to swing it in.

On a big block car, you usually need to pull the radiator and support.
