Few days ago I was actually on the way to my Corvette mechanic to get couple of jobs done when all of a sudden the Auto Trans in my 82 Vette neutralised - just stopped driving. This has happened to me probably twice in the past 12 months especially if I attempt to drive the car a bit hard when cold - must add here that I was less than a kilometre from home when this last problem happened. This time however I could not get the auto trans to re engage at all - when this has happened previously it just re engaged and that was that.
Tranny is the original Turbo 700R4 and mileage would be very high probably around 170K miles. Will be removing it on coming monday when a hoist becomes available in the workshop - I'm guessing that the tranny will be completely buggered - anyone else have an opinion??
before removing the trans i would just remove the pan and look for any metal scuba divers. sounds strange there was no bad noises as a warning sign something was going to fail. i would be checking fluid height and the condition of your filter.
Two 'simple' possibilities are:
1) not enough oil in the transmission; it should be checked in Neutral range with the engine running and motor warmed up.
2) the oil pickup tube is damaged or the O-ring seal on it is hard/bad and the tube is sucking air instead of oil.
Check those items first before you do any disassembly of the tranny.
I acknowledge you comments and advice thanks guys. Will remove the pan first before taking tranny out but the oil is clean, oil level is slightly over full and filter has only a few miles on the clock as well. Will keep you posted, thanks.
