Hi,
The radio in my '71 works fine except the light is not working. Every now and then the light will come on briefly and then go out again. Do you think this is an issue with the radio, or with the wiring to the radio? Is there a way to diagnose without pulling the radio and putting a different one in? Any suggestions are welcome.
Make sure the dimmer for the dash lights is up all the way, otherwise the connection in the lamp socket would be the place to check, along with the wires in the back of the radio.
If the other dash lights don't do the same thing, your problem is in the radio light alone. It is merely a single lamp and housing inside the radio. Removing it from the radio is not as big of a deal as removing the radio...which is a bi+c#! My guess would be that the contact point at the end of the lamp bulb is worn away and no longer in good contact with the socket contact.
I recently replaced the bulb in my original radio in my 73. You have to remove the radio, then remove the top plate off the radio. You will see the bulb inside, easy to remove and replace. The bulb is similar to auto/flashlight bulbs with a bayonet base. I had an exact match in my parts drawer, but I am sure NAPA or Radio Shack may have ones that will fit. Make sure you get a 12V one.
