Default 68-70 gas lid (door)

Anyone change the gas door on a 68-70 that will not stay up no matter what you do to a newer one (71-77) that has a spring to hold the door open?

I just bought a newer Bezel and lid, but now find that the tank filler neck seal is in the way of the spring.
Old

New

I figure it should work as the neck seal sold at Ecklers fits 68-74's.

Help please!

Just noticed that the 75-77 tank neck seal is flat, so does anyone have a picture of a 75-77 installed as I would like to see if you can see the tank?

Thanks

I can't answer your question but have some of my own, can you or have you returned the new parts?

Are you against using the "correct" lid & hinge?

Hi T69,
Since as you say the 68-74 rubber boot is the same I'd think your later bezel should work. Is the boot on correctly with the drain towards the rear of the car, and is the tank neck centered in the rear deck opening?
Regards,
Alan

I am keeping both. I polished the stock one and am painting the one new one that flips up and stays up when I paint the car over the next few months.

I like the lid to stay up when I fill up, it is my OCD kicking in.

I went to the local corvette shop and a 74 vert I saw rubbed the same way mine rubs so I guess that is the way it was done.

I will put a small notch so it rubs less.

Yeah I looked as a matching numbers 74 vert today and it rubbed the same way.

My stock seal/drain is on correct tank is perfectly centered, but I centered it when I cleaned the tank.

Note: that the matching number car I saw the hole was not exactly centered.

Thanks

I have two 68 lids and both need pressure to close them, that's why I asked.

BTW, if that top picture is the one you polished you do nice work!

Mine needs pressure to close as well, I just want it to stay up when I go to fill up.

Newer ones have a return spring which holds the lid up, so GM must have thought it a good idea.

I would really like a baldwin motion cap, but that is another story.

Thanks
