I'm re-wiring the engine compartment & forward lights from the fuse block forward. I would like to toss the fusible links & go with either fuses or circuit breakers. Anyone know what rating I should use? Or just have an opinion?
I would recommend reading this http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...evymain1.shtml I have a relay package for the head lights and have created and separate main bus bar from the horn relay. I would recommend sticking with the fusible links as shown on the web site. Best of luck!
Why? The fusible links are not intended to ever fail...unless some other accessory fails in a mode that creates a 'dead' short to the wiring harness containing that fusible link. In that case, the fusible link [wire] melts; but it signals you that there is something else that has failed. So, with these circuit breakers, you could just "push the button" to reset the breaker...so that it could just blow again and again???
I rewired my '72 some 7 years ago, daily driven, left the links alone...have Dual Spal fans and a nice relay control direct off the higher amp alt.....works fine, just like the factory....
The ONLY thing to wire direct off the bat is any head units/equalizers for you car stereo....the main power amp needs be off the horn relay, switched power off the normal radio source the car was built with....any problems at that point is crappy gear or needing a inline filter choke and cap to ground.....
When You give MAD a call and IF you get through ( there is just one guy answering phones, Mike, I think) tell him what you are working with he will explain everything in detail. I think I spent 45 min on the phone with him going over my entire electrical system. The more you know the better off in the end.
