Just finished rebuilding the column in my 77 ..horn wont stop any suggestions? I have it all back apart now and I don't see anything wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
your horn wire in your column is grounded somewhere... test continuity to ground along various points in the circuit..
the horn circuit is usually OPEN, when you press the contact, it completes a ground.. which sends current thru the horn relay and causes the relay to send current to your horns.. you have that wire going to ground somewhere.. sometimes you may find a plastic insulator is missing, or upside down....
I am having the same problem with my 75 and I have not been able to figure it out. I have tried to take it apart and put it back together several times with no luck. I have looked through the parts diagrams in the catalogs and I apear to have everything... So If you can figure it out let me know!
I had a similar problem on my 76.That was a couple ofyears ago.Seems like it was the contact ring.I had replaced with a new one and the insulator that is sandwiched between the 2 pieces was thinner than original. I took the new one apart and replaced the insulator with the old one .Worked fine ever since.Hope this helps.
try as 76vette suggested. if the horn sounds with the horn button in place, and doesn't sound with the horn button off, it's the contact ring. try removing the contact ring and the other pieces that complete the circuit if that doesn't help. i had a non-gm contact ring that sounded every time i hit a bump!
What would you check for if it sounds even with the horn button off? I know my problem is in the colum. Next step is to take everything out to the point where you pull the column and see if the horn still goes off when i put the relay in

Disconnect the long electrical connector on the base of the column.
That will tell you if it is in the column itself.
With it still disconnected,
Connect an ohm meter preferrably one with a buzzer, to the lower shaft at the rag joint, leave other lead to test with.
With your parts explosion handy, and the horn button off the steering wheel, start testing the horn contact rings and spring button etc.
This will test the horn ground circuit.
You can test the horn signal circuit from the turn signal contact to the harmonica plug for a short to ground.

Agreed. I just fixed this yesterday on my '73 after rebuilding my T/T column. The new contact ring I bought had a split in the spring steel that the button snaps into. It was o.k. without the horn button but sounded continuously with the horn button in place. I bought a new horn button. Same problem, so I took out the newly purchased contact ring and put the old one back in and it worked fine.
