usually any modification to the exhaust system is an automatic failure if they check for that stuff.

that being said
both my 72 vette and 68 mustang have headers and here in san antonio they dont even look at them.

Default headers

here in utah it depends on the year , i think 84 and newer require all the smog stuff to be on the car. i have headers on my 69 coupe and my 79 olds cutlass and they pass fine. if its the smog pump you have to have hedman makes a smog tube kit for headers for around $80.00. hope this helps. tom

If you registered them as antiques you are not required to inspect them

Go to the inspection station and give it a try. You'll either pass it or fail. If the latter, you'll be given info on why it didn't pass plus some time (10-30 days, depending on state) to get it 'repaired'. If they won't even test it with the headers on it, then you'll have to get them changed. But, I'd bet your car will be tested and, if it passes the emissions test, you'll be OK.

Im not aware of any inspection requirements or emmissions testing at all in Minnesota. That was all abolished maybe ~10 years ago.

So if you are in MN, no need to worry about anything really

Nada. Nothing. Zilch. All the emission inspection stations were closed many, many, moons ago. State budget didnt want to support it and studies indicated it made no positive effect on the air quality in our state. Most cars on the road are newer model with functional emissions systems.

I think if you are building a kit car, with no previous VIN, then you will have to get a safety inspection.

The only other way I can think of needing to get an inspection is if you get a "fix it" ticket from having a tail light out and somehow **** off a cop.

Amazing!!! You must have some monster cars on the roads!! On a side note though, you must have a lot of old POSs on the road ready to fall apart, or God forbid, brakes that won't work in an accident...

In Tennessee we have sniffer tests on 75-95 and OBD2 on 96 up. No safety inspections. Not all cities have that, only the ones in non-attainment zones.

So now I see how Jed Clampett's car was able to be street legal!!

Unfortunately, when he got to California, it wouldn't pass the smog tests....
