OK, figured it out with some help from an old school engine builder. The lower guide is insert from the top into the block. It is then tapped down past 1/2" to met the bottom of the dipstick tube when it is inserted.
Now I just need to figure out which dipstick tube to use. The one with the tapper at the top or the longer one for a 20" stick.
Long as it works, I have resorted in the past to pouring 5-6 whatever quarts in the pan, and dipping the stick to mark appropriately for whatever length was necessary....just a notch with a dremel will work....
Hi B68,
This is what I found.
All SB sticks have a black plug.
Original SB tubes change diameter about two inches from the top.
Service Replacement tube is the same diameter the whole way down to the block.
A/C cars have a 4" longer tube.
I don't know if this helps at all!
Regards,
Alan

Thanks 68-69 Manual, NCRS
That help, now I just need the lenght of the black tip rod.
What was throwing me off was, that all the catalogs say except hi. perf. My tapered tube you mentioned looks to short that is why I wanted a measurement.
I guess the tube Zip sent me is a A/C car tube. It is alot longer.

Budman,
Here's some pics of my 68 and 72 dipsticks. The top pic is the 68 dipstick. It is a GM service replacement. The part number is 3981019. I have my original 68 dipstick but it has lot of rust pitting on the loop and is missing the black plug. So I replaced it. The original tube and guide is still in the block.
The 72's dipstick and tube I believe to be original. The part number is 3862730.
Both measure out at 21 3/16". Hope this helps.
Also, the 4" longer tubes are for the 427 with a/c.
