Hello, I only jack up my 79 Vette to change the oil. I use a small Sears jack to clear the front end. The jack has a 4" round "disc" at the end that makes contact with the frame under the oil pan when I jack it up. That frame area is dented in from the jack. Its not major, but still dented in from the jack? Is this normal or? Al
Hi Al,
I think you'll find many cars have that area dented. There's a tool you can buy or rent to straighten it out if it bothers you.
I made a little wooden cradle with a curve in it to spread the load on/to the jack. No more dents.
Regards,
Alan
The front crossmember isn't intended to be a jacking point. It looks like it would be ideal and that's why so many frames are dented in on the bottom of the crossmember. You should either jack the car up from the side to get enought clearance to get to the oil pan or get a pair of ramps. The fact that there is a tool available to straighten out the dents is a good indication of how common this problem is.
