I have a 78' L82 4 speed I want to pep her up some and don't realy know a ton about engine combonations. I am putting true dual exhaust and plan to elliminte all smog equipment (A.I.R. system). My origional stock set up runs ok but when it is hot and I shut it off then start again after sitting a little while it starts hard and blows a cloud of smoke. I think it floods somehow cause it does not smoke any other time and starts fine when cold. Anyway I was thinking maybe a Holley 600 doublepumper. Any advice would be greatly appreciated I am mechanical and pick up quickly. Thanks in advance.
Assuming that you have the original Q-Jet carb on the engine, you have [at least] two options: spend a significant amount of money on a new carb and take your chances with how it is set up; OR buy a good reference book on the repair/maintenance of the Q-Jet and good rebuild kit/parts plus spend some time learning about your carb and how to rebuild it. On the one side, you are investing money and learning nothing; on the other, you are investing time and gaining knowledge about the carb, which you can use in the future, as well. Only you can determine which is the right course for you and your situation. If you're not into the mechancial aspect of car repair...buy the Holley [or a well rebuilt Q-Jet].
A 600 DP would work great though it is not a direct bolt on to stock intake. Holley has a spread bore carb that is. Q-J has plugs in the carb body that can leak & can be fixed.
Your Quadrajet is a better carb. Sounds like your problem may not be the carb, though. If your evap canister purge system is not working, it will cause the hard starting you describe.
