Can anyone tell me how the rear vent works on a '69 roadster you know the one across the rear deck?? It looks like it is vacuum operated but I am not sure what switch controls it or what it is connected to. Right now it is open, I've tried all the magic words I know to close but no luck. Any info. would be appreciated.

Thanks
Roger

One of the thumb wheels on the heater controls opens and closes it. On my 71', the steel tube that goes from the center console back to the vacuum actuator rusted through so it was not getting vacuum to close it.

It doesn't.Just free it up enough so that it wil close and forget it.Another GM marketing gimmick that really never did anything but give a bunch of bored engineers something to do.

The Astro Vent allowed fresh air to flow through the car as long as the temperature control is set to minimum. Move the dial away from minimum toward warm and vent should close keeping the warm air in the car.

does this also apply to a roadster with A/C? Someone told me they should not operate on an A/C car?

I don't have A/C in my '70, but others have said in other threads that the rear vents stay closed in an A/C car. I'm not sure of the exact configuration, but the car w/ A/C should not need an air actuator.

It's true that cars with A/C have block-off plates on the Astro plenums in place of the 'flapper' doors.

According to the AIM for my 71', cars with A/C had a block off plate screwed to the opening instead of the "Astrovent" flapper.

I"M not sure about how that 'Asstro Vent' system was supposed to tie in with the rear grills on either side of the gas filler, but they were opened and closed with the two levers on either side of the 'special' console trim plate, two buttons/levers either side up forward, flat spot on the little button/****....think it must have been a slip cable contraption....

Anyway, my '72 vert had the rear panels blocked off on the vertical panel on the stern of the hatch....they were cut along with the plactic to mount 6x9 speakers, years ago....

An a/c car had all that crap blocked off and a different trim plate, the inlets being blocked entirely on the driver's side kick panel...no airflow there at ALL, the pass side had a vacuum actuated flapper in there that had the opposite action as the one under the top section of that air passage/plenum coming off the wiper door area....suck on the line and one opened and the other closed...springs reversed the action when the vacuum was removed....

the above was all FINE for a T-top/ coupe....but absolutely a total waste of time for a convertible...as ASStro vent was totally silly with top UP or DOWN...

which brings up another thing, I blocked my intake flappers off, and so my a/c is on recirculation with NO 'fresh air' induction possible.....

There are OTHER modifications to the car coming up, with the up coming repaint...so maybe some pix will be forthcoming at some time, of various aspects to the job, AND the reasoning behind them....these are just body mods, nothing mechanical, this time round...

Completely incorrect. No connection with the two levers. Those opened thefloor vents in the kick panels.
