81 initial timing

Default 81 initial timing

Hey there, I have an 81 with computerized timing. I want to set initial timing and forgot what and where i have to disconnect to correctly time it. As always thanks for any help. I can't believe i forgot this!!!!!!!

Disconnect the computer cable on the distributor and set the timing at 12* before. The book says 8* but 12 will make it happier.

For the record, I believe the "book" says 6*.

I agree with both. Check the emissions sticker above the brake booster for the stock setting if that's what you want to do. A little more advance will make it run better but will cost you some points in emissions (and a smog check fail if they look). If you add too much advance, you'll get detonation (pinging) on acceleration.
