Put the old points back in and see if the problem goes away.

I bought a set of points from O'Reillys, their best ones, and couldn't even get the dwell set because the base plate kept flexing in the middle. Put the old ones back in and it was good to go.

Hey ************* CCRane is on to something here.

We had a customer in the shop around 4 months ago with a set of points he installed and a very sick running car!
The two contacts were only hitting on about 1/3 rd of the surface, the throw arm was bent.

Good idea and I forgot about this. I don't know where the customer got the points set, but we only use the Delco points sets I think the p/n is D103P.

Use HD points with spring pressure 28-32 oz ( BW 112HP, Napa CS 786, Delco 112 or Accel 8140 point & condenser kit. The key to a good running points distributor is to optomize the ignition curve, use quality ignition parts and to correct excessive looseness.

Napa CS 786 and condenser are what I bought, I think its probably more than the points but I'll swap in the old ones just to see what happens, I just wish I would have checked the dwell quick before I changed the points so I knew what the baseline was...oh well, its all in good fun

Your old points will retain their dwell setting as long as you don't turn the allen head screw or make any other changes.
