I posted this in the paint section but figured it really should have been here.
Thinking about painting my cast iron intake manifold. it is currently the correct Chevy orange but I am thinking of going to that silver, gray or aluminum color you see so much. Can anyone advise what they used and where to get the paint.
From a practical standpoint, you really don't need hi temp paint for an intake. I painted my whole engine with Plasticoat Chev blue (not the exhausts, of course) 6 years ago and the color still looks rich.
I`m having one powder coated for $60. He`s in lake in the hills and he`ll do any color and sheen you want.
I am making this change after it is already mounted or I would have jumped vat that. BUT I have many additional parts I may want coated so a name and address would be appreciated.
BTW- Do you know any good local paint shops for the body paint?
7T9's comment is right on but on earlier manifolds I believe there is a heat 'cross over' that runs side to side under the carb, this area gets hot enough to darken regular engine enamel but not the 'high temp kind.

Alan

Yes, I've run the engine since then
It's not a matter of needing hi temp paint for the manifold other than getting the "silver" finish correct.
The hi temp has a flat finish while the engine enamel has a deeper glossy finish that's not desired(at least on 78-79 L82s with factory alum painted intakes)
Painted one for a friend with engine enamel and knew right away it wasn't right. Went over it with the alum hi temp.
I believe for my 68 the manifold was painted Chevy orange along with the rest of the block. But I just like the look better with the manifold having the aluminum look.
