Default Check that torque wrench!

I kept breaking off bolts as I torques the head down. It would go to about 60 lbs OK but when I went to 65 it would just stretch them. Really frustrated me and I thought maybe I had weak bolts. Borrowed my machine shops guy's wrench and they went down just great. Had to buy two new gaskets but I learned something. Odd thing was it worked to a point. I heard at the NAPA store that they send them in to be calibrated. Costs as much as a new though.

Do you set your torque wrench to 0 after your done with it and and store it? If you take the load off the spring between use, it will stay more accurate.

I would be curious to have you take the borrowed wrench and compare it with yours. Torque a bolt with the known "good wrench" to various torques, then check it with yours. Is yours a "balance beam" model or a fully adjustable "clicker"? Chuck

I was just getting ready to say the same exact thing. When you are finished using the torque wrench you should ALWAYS reset the wrench to "0". The springs in the torque wrench will last longer and the wrench will also stay more accurate.
