mo too lol. sorry about the confusion. could a dirty fuel filter or a nonworking fuel pump cause the backfire in the carb. If a lean condition causes this backfire could this be the reason? Also, can a bad gas cap create a vacum leak?
I don't see how the gas cap can cause a vacuum leak.
How old is the gas in the tank? If the inline filter went from "clear to a bunch of orangish colored stuff " quickly, you could be starving the carb, float bowls would be low/empty and this could cause an extreme lean condition.
Unhook the fuel line coming into the carb and see if fuel pumps while you're cranking. Pull the fuel filter out of the line and do the same thing. This should tell you if the fuel pump is working.
If the fuel filter is blocking flow, you may need to drain the tank and figure out where the crud is coming from before you replace the filter. If no fuel is being pumped, that would be the next step.
