I just received a new set of GM LT-1 L-82 valve covers from GM parts. How crude are these. They have so many cracks and aluminum slag from the castings. Also crips and chunks out of the edges where the gasket meets. Is this normal? I think I could find a better set at a flee market. I was surprised that I could still order the originals from GM. Now I know why they still have old stock. I'm going to return them and have them order another set, and hope they are in better condition. I see Corvette Central has them. Are they replica's or orignals?
There is an area along the intake side of the covers that look like there is material missing. That is by design. If you have some nicks or such then I would send them back too.
I purchased the same valve covers from Willcox corvette last year and I was a bit disappointed with them when I received them. It turns out that is the way they come. I was told they came from the original mold which is all but worn out. Willcox agreed to refund me my money if i wanted but I decided to keep them. They do still look good.
Wow! You'd be better off buying a used set off of flea-bay and getting them powder coated.
BTW - I have a set from a 71 that are off for powder coating, $30! Not bad, I thought.
I tried to take pictures, but their blurred, or have flash reflection in them. Mashman those look about the same. The edges at the bottom are real bad. Looks like chips broke off and they glued them back on. Spoke with Corvette Central, and was informed that Paragon has the old molds and they need work. It's about time!
Well I just called Paragon, they state their valve covers are original GM specs. and they are chrome plated over aluminum with some imperfections between the fins but nothing he wouldn't put on a show car.??? The ones I have say Genuine GM on the box and they are polished aluminum.

I've never heard of powder coating a polished aluminum piece. How does it look when finished? Mine are pretty crappy looking so i wonder if trying to polish them would be a wast of time.

I'll post a picture when I get them back next week. There was some minor pitting on one of them, the guy said he could spray some extra powder on that area to help smooth it out some, but it still wouldn't be perfect. So, they won't look new, but they'll be better than what they looked like before. Plus, I took my intake too and it's being done in the same color, so they'll look good together under the hood.
