Nod nod. Lets not get into a flame war. only 2 things on my part:
1. You shouldn't degrade Norval as you've never even seen the system in person. Why don't you take your micrometers up there and check it out for yourself instead of crucifying him on the spot; although the offer is probably not on the table.
2. I'd trust an engineer of 35 years to know enough about materials, manufacturing, and geometry to construct components. It's like mowing your lawn. You can pay a professional $30/half acre or the kid next door $12 and some lemonade. Price often != quality.
And after the smoke has cleared, us '80-82's still got the shaft.
80-82's didn't necessarily get the shaft in all aspects- we got a Dana 44 (modified) differential, larger diamater halfshafts, and larger yokes.
Unfortunately, since our numbers are limited compared to the 63-79 setup, most aftermarket suppliers (Tom's for example) don't offer all of their products for our arrangement.
Flareside,
If you care to go to the top of this page you might see this post was about the "Guldstrand 5-link". And unless the taliban took over this country i am still entitled to my opinion. redvetracr
PS: I buy lots of parts, maybe your stuff is simply "overpriced" !!
Here's the link to some pictures of Norval's installation guys. While the conventional method of measuring bump steer is using indicators, I don't see anything wrong with Norval's method either. There's more than one way to skin a cat I guess. I'd love to have this setup!
Ah, it's so refreshing when I come over here after working my butt off for weeks & can see a nice fight or two!! I need to post more often, I haven't made anyone really mad lately. Norval & I have had our issues, but mainly just friendly banter & differences on technology. Very few people here have built a car to the level he has, so he gets my nod. The Guldstrand 6 bar is by far the most beautiful suspension piece I have ever seen & one of the costliest ever. Basically it is designed to bring the C-3 up to C-4 & greater specs. After spending lots of time researching it with them, I decided to just build a custom frame for the next project. Their unit with coil overs & some of Tom's pieces would be about as far as you can take a C-3. For the money, the VB&P is probably a really close second & way cheaper.
As this post got carried away from its original route i got give my two cents for it. As long as i have been working on a cars i have realized at most parts are really poor quality, and trust me , i have seen more than a set of taiwan mede valvecovers. My point is, if you need topend parts to take maximum performance/looks out of YOUR SPECIFIC COMBINATION/CAR there is no "BOLT ON " solution, because manufactures had to offer their parts for mass aplication to get enough sales volume. Only way to get it right ,is to have it custom made or built it yourself,as Norwal did and based pictures i have seen its way better than Guldstrand kit .
Terry - I really wanted to add those control arms. I had the folks at Guldstrand interface with the folks at Tom's. We would have been able to use the 6 bar & many of Tom's parts as well, but those control arms were actually a problem. They won't work with both systems, so the answer to your questions is no - they are different parts, but they all fufill the same function. That function is to keep everything in line under power & stop flex, roll etc.
I dumped my wimpy 1980 center section and went to the Toms 12 bolt setup.
I went the full VB&P setup (front and rear), with Guldstrand 5 bar rear suspension. I also used the Herb Adams spherical-jointed sway bars. I didn't use the half-shaft loops because I'm not a serious drag racer. I probably would have used Norval's system - but I didn't know about it two years ago.
Darn - more dollars spent!
When I get back to CONUS I'll be able to enjoy the beast. Winter in northern Montana isn't really "Vette weather"..
See you guys when I finally get back home to civilization...Might drop over to see Steve in Washington..
