Default stuck in reverse

Backed the 71 out the drive and when I went to shift to first car would not go forward acted like brake was on. Now all I can do is go in reverse and reversed is where shift **** is in netural position. What should I look for. This happen a couple of years ago at a muffler shop and they put it on a rack and played with I believe was the linkage??????
Stock linkage and trans.

Block the wheels get under the car and move all levers to neutral position.

You gotta get under it and pull the reverse lever on the trans to line up the neutral gate on the shifter. Sounds like the shifter needs rebuilt.

actually you will see where they are stuck together...it will take so little effort to release them you will be like WTF why couldn't I just do this via the shifter

FWIW it only happened twice to me..more PITA than anything

it happens to my 69 from time to time, you can reach under the car and do it if you are 6'4" but then you have grease all over you. If i remeber correctly you need the forward two leavers in the center position and the rear leaver in the back position.

A little hint, never ever shift from reverse to first with the car the least bit still moving

The only way that problem can occur is if the linkage arm bushings are worn and/or the rods where the bushings fit are also worn. The assembly is just too 'sloppy' to function properly. Buy a new bushing kit (or bushings and arms if you need) and it will feel like a new shifter.

You can also put the shifter in a vise and give it a tiny squeeze.

ttt
Thanks again for the help. It is more of a P.I.T.A. than anything. I took a picture of the levers in the netural position on my trans. 71 4 speed.
