Backed the 71 out the drive and when I went to shift to first car would not go forward acted like brake was on. Now all I can do is go in reverse and reversed is where shift **** is in netural position. What should I look for. This happen a couple of years ago at a muffler shop and they put it on a rack and played with I believe was the linkage??????
Stock linkage and trans.
actually you will see where they are stuck together...it will take so little effort to release them you will be like WTF why couldn't I just do this via the shifter
FWIW it only happened twice to me..more PITA than anything
Thanks guys Glad it is just a p.i.t.a. well have to get it back on kiwk lift and see if I can line it up. as long as it is on the lift I can change oil and grease it.
it happens to my 69 from time to time, you can reach under the car and do it if you are 6'4" but then you have grease all over you. If i remeber correctly you need the forward two leavers in the center position and the rear leaver in the back position.
A little hint, never ever shift from reverse to first with the car the least bit still moving
HERE IS A LINK TO A PICTURE OF TRANS AND LINAGE ARE THESE IN THE NETURAL POSITION.
also If this is a good pitcture I do not know how to down load it onto this site. http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?topic=10338.0#top
Edited see picture I posted below post. Levers in this link picture are not correct for my trans.
The only way that problem can occur is if the linkage arm bushings are worn and/or the rods where the bushings fit are also worn. The assembly is just too 'sloppy' to function properly. Buy a new bushing kit (or bushings and arms if you need) and it will feel like a new shifter.
