First ill start with i have had a slew of small block power plants ranging from 165hp smog 350 ,355,383,406's in this 75 corvette. and just recently i have built a 496 big block with afr heads all forged internals but now i might have to change my hood do to clearance issues. i will be using a carb with no choke tower. i was wondering if any one has made this swap and what intake carb choice did u use... i would like to us a vic jr air gap with a Quick fuel carb. i think i can get it to fit with low rise Air cleaner. my last small block carb stud tickled the hood. and i ran a performer rpm and a holley dbl pump with the choke tower.
The reasons for the big block is obvious Torque and bragging rights at the local car show and amongst pole barn drinking! He he.
Grab a block of silly putty (or something similar). Mold it into a tower or shaft approximately the height of the hood surface when closed. Place it on the manifold, standing up of course, and close the hood. The hood will depress the putty and provide you with an accurate measurement of available space.
I have a 75 and have been told the same hood was used for both SB and BB that year, but I think if you use an air gap intake you'll have a problem even with a drop base. JIMT's putty idea is the real way to tell if it's in the car. A ball of tinfoil works good too.
I purchased an aluminum dropped/offset air cleaner base off of e-bay for $15 and installed it on my Performance Jet Q-Jet carb on my 1979 L-82. I have 1 1/4" clearnace between the top of the air cleaner and the hood liner.

Reason: add info
When i originally did the bigblock swap in my 79, I used a 427 and a tripower setup in it fit great under the hood. Then i found a Old Tarantula intake for bbc and that fit under the hood with a 780 holley/ with air horn on it and a drop base air cleaner, just fit - the old tarantula intakes are pretty low single plane intakes. I then went to an l88 intake and had to put a l88 hood for clearance on it. Hope this gives some insight.
