Default temperature gauge question

should the temperature switch/sensor on the driverside head be a two prong or a single prong? (1974 sb). What should the wiring look like to it? any pics would be great. thanks in advance.

Hi NMMP,
I believe the temp sender for your 74 SB should have a single spade type terminal.
I'm sorry I can't help on the appearance of the harness connector.
Regards,
Alan

He is correct. The color of the wire is dark green and comes out of the harness where your alternator wiring is now. Make sure that you have the correct sending unit because as what I have been told that there are different types , (eventhough they will all fit into the cylinder head, but some years use a different size pipe thread) The temperature gauge for the year of your Corvette falls into an era of gauge design that uses a specific temp sender. I am not at work right now but I know that CORVETTE CLOCKS BY ROGER has that information. He is who told me about the differences in these senders due top gauges not reading correctly and found that it was in having an incorrect temp sender installed. GM sells temp senders for 63 to 82 underr one part number and that is not correct. I know, I tried and it didn't work until I contacted Roger. And yes the temp sender is in the drivers side cylinder head. GMC "DUB"

1972-1979 had the sending unit in the head. It was a single terminal as shown below.

On my 78 I have what is referred to as a "thumb tack" style sending unit. The connector slides on from the side not head on like the one posted. One vendor states this is correct for up to 78.

I think 2 prong was used for 70-73. Very confusing for something so simple

The '71 sender has a single 'prong', but it is a pin-terminal...not a spade terminal. [info only....this doesn't help the OP]

But I am curious; what is the OP's problem?

thanks guys for clearing that up. the person who had it before me had a double spade in there, which i believe is more of a switch than a sender. i guess that would explin why he put an aftermarket temp gauge in.
