Hi all,
Going to replace the starter in my '74 in a few days. There's got to be more to it than my manual said. Sounds way to easy!
So all you guys with experience tell me what I really need to do,things to watch out for.
Thanks in advance,
#1 thing. Disconnect the battery. You will have lots of live wires loose if you don't.
Simple job. Remove old wires, noting where they go (tape and label). Two bolts, starter out. New starter in, 2 bolts (only need about 25 ft lbs). Reattach wires. Now reconnect battery and good to go.
Make sure you DON'T put the 14g black ground wire on the pos terminal of the solenoid...even though it will fit.
Very,very,very common mistake.
edit-Here is a link that shows the black wire I"m referring to.Roll down to post #3. Put the black wire under the starter bolt as Duke has it or under one of the bellhousing bolts. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...-question.html

Yes, it is as easy as the books say. Pretty much the only way you can screw it up is to put the wrong wire on a terminal. Pay attention to where things come off, and make sure you put them back to the same place and you should be going again in a matter of minutes. Disconnecting the battery first is a great idea. Also, take the extra 5 minutes to remove, clean, and replace the ground strap's connection to the frame.
Unless you're using a mini starter, there should be a bracket supporting the front of the starter, connecting to the block. Don't forget to reinstall it.
