Used to be you couldn't buy a new (stock) water pump, now they are everywhere. I'd buy a new one and hang onto the old.

Early C3s had a unique pump with a smooth upper surface on the casting. Later C3s (72 and up?) had a different casting with a pronounced bump on the top with a flat upper surface. This bump was then drilled and tapped and was intended to be usable as port for a pump bypass like on a BBC. On Corvettes, the boss was blocked with a plug. The photos above by Dustup7T2 show this threaded boss.

Hope this helps.

Default OH, I finally understand

This thing. Since it talked about heater hose, I kept looking at the heater hose plug on the side

Default ASC Pump

so I go to the local Autozone and ask for the new 29.99 Duralast stock pump. I even give the store's part number (looked on net). Clerk brings me the box (right number on box) but when I open it up, the pump looks aluminum. I can tell it is the right pump, but aluminum. Three times I try to tell the clerk I don't think this is the correct pump but he tells me it is. I pay and leave. Later on the net I see this is a ASC aluminum pump for my car. Autozone does not even carry this pump, found it on Advanceauto's site for 108.99. My guess is that one company manufactures a lot of different pumps and needed to fill one more box than they had stock pumps. It will look good on my engine. Somtimes fate smiles at you as opposed to sneeking up behind to break wind.

If I really had luck, I would not have needed a water pump <G>
