Default Heads / Manifold question???

I've got some new heads, edelbrocks. Also, an edelbrock 2101 manifold. The heads have water passages front and rear. The manifold has water passages center and front. Is this normal, how do the heads stay cool??? seems like there would be no flow through the head???

By water passages, i mean the ones next to the intake runner ports, the ones sealed by the intake manifold gasket.

The intake has a water passage in front. Heads are same both sides.
The intake center has a heat riser passage to heat carb & is used in some for heat for the choke.

PS Note the front of the engine is higher than back & as you know heat rises.

The cooling passages in the heads/block are only in the front. GM put ports on each end of the head so the head can be interchangeable (left to right; right to left). No need to buy left or right side head.

Thanks,

So the center cooling passage in the manifold won't fill with water? or is there a internal link between the front cooling passage and center cooling passages in the manifold, because there's no center cooling passage in the heads?

There isn't a center intake cooling passage, it's for exhaust heat - see post 2.

So that's different from EGR?

Yes. Carb heating to help vaporize the fuel esp. in cold weather has been used for a long time.
EGR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation is an emissions control, lowers peak combustion temp.

"2101" does not have EGR.

So it's just a sealed passage, with air in it, no feeds from anywhere? like exhaust or water? sealed on both sides by the intake gaskets?

The center heat passage gets exhaust from the heads.
For performance many of us block it off.

Alright, thanks. It looks like the heads i got have no provision for the exhaust gasses to get to this area.

Correct, those do not have heat crossover provisions. If you are running a Q-jet, you'll need to convert to an electric choke since that crossover is what heats up your choke.
