The passenger door on my 71 when you open it fully, then close it the top hinge makes a nice "pop" on the closing action only. Is this something that can be solved with lithium grease (or other lube) or do I need to replace the pins/bushings/assy? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Most of the time its the spring slipping OVER the roller because the roller is not turning. Usually because its froze up. Sometimes shooting WD into the roller pivot pin and then rotating the roller will free it up. I usually can take a screwdriver and place the blade on the roller and strike the screwdriver with a hammer and get the roller to move and eventually free up
Here's a word of advice from a guy who didn't take care of the same problem when it first started and lived to regret it. I not only wound up breaking my hinge spring but a few days later I opened my door into the broken spring which had moved around and cracked a piece out of the front of the door panel! OUCH!
It's a very easy bit of maintenance to take care of with potentially huge consequences if you do not. You can bet I'll never put it off again.
The rollers bind up and you may be able to get some grease on them to stop this problem before it happens. We had a customers car in our shop about 5 years ago break the spring and as J Scott, it went thru the door when closed.
