Thermostat temperature
Hello Fellow Vetteheads,
Well got the radiator up and running with one leak do not know if it is coming from the water pump gaskets hard to see, will deal with tomarrow. What temperature thermostat is the norm or is there one?
I put in a 195 is that too hot??
must be getting paranoid seems hot, temperature gauge didn't get over 200 so it works. Weigh in please
I may change out if I have to change the water pump.

Thermostat controls minimum temperature, not maximum.
Maximum temperature is determined by the ability for the radiator to transfer heat to the surrounding air. The greater the temperature difference, the greater the ability to transfer (which is why cars overheat in the summer, less difference).
BTW, 195 is fine. That is what I had stock. I run 180 now but that is so my electric fans (195 on, 185 off) don't run all the time. The only time I get up to 195 is when I have no airflow (stopped in traffic, fans not running yet). I do have a very efficient aluminum radiator.

A 195F stat was 'standard' in '76. However, the only reason for it being that high was for emissions control (lower hydrocarbon emissions at higher running temp.). Do your engine a favor and install 180F stat; chances are that it will run cooler than 195.
