Default 1970 Front Bumper Install

I've been working on putting my 70 back together and I've been posting lately about the front headlamp support crossmember and such.

I've been ordering parts thru Paragon to tidy up the front grille / bumper area on the car.

I received some angled (twisted in shape) brackets which appear to mount at the outer edge of the bumpers, behind the fiberglass. There is a U-shaped bracket bolted to the end of the extension. Do these angled brackes bolt to the U-shaped brackets? Also...do I use shims here?

I'll try to clarify shortly with Paragon part numbers once I grab the catalog. My manuals show these, but I'm unsure about the orientation.

Thanks

Matt

Here's the part numbers on the angled brackets.
Paragon Number: 11009K

Here's the page from the AIM that shows the brackets. The "U" shaped one is #11 and the twisted one doesn't have a number in this view but it is called reinforcement ext. If this isn't enough info, I can take a photo of my 71' (if I can see the brackets with the bumper on). Yes, you use shims (#15 in the picture) to get the bumper lined up.

Gary

Here's the page that shows the twisted extensions you ref from Paragon.

Thanks Gary.

This is a pretty complex diagram. The reinforcement extension (angled piece) attaches to the U bracket at the end of the outer extension, shown in the lower diagram on the far right. I'm not sure how these mate up with the hardware and shims.

One other question, does the radiator support rod attach to the bumper itself or to the bumper support bracket which runs the width of the car? Mine is not lining up.

Thanks

I looked at my 71', and with the bumper and headlights installed, you can't see much. I did find an old picture that shows the u-bracket but didn't have one of the twisted one.
Here is the U-bracket photo.

This photo shows the center support rod. It attaches to the top of the center bumper brace. Note the use of the shims. My car was smashed in the front before I got it so they had to use LOTS of shims. It's been a few years since I've had mine apart but as I recall, if you loosley assemble the brackets, it may become more clear how it all goes together

Here's another photo from the underside.

Those photos really help. My car must have been in a wreck and Bubba was in heaven fixing it. I see how you're shims are placed there. I may need to shim mine but I fear I don't have enough "flex" to get it there. I may use some Bubba myself and modify the rod length.

That first photo shows the exact area where I'm working. The angled bracket mounts to the U-brace. I see how your U-brace is positioned. This will be a start.

Thanks for the great pics.

You need to buy a copy of the factory Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for 1970. Most all of the aftermarket places have them. You can get a hardcopy binder or the CD-rom version. I have...and use...both. The hardcopy book is necessary; the CD-rom version is nice.

Thanks for the advice.

I already have one. The AIM's are great but do not show exact hose, wire routing. The bumper assy. and especially the hardware is not shown in detail. In this case, a picture is worth a 1000 AIM's.

I received all of my hardware. I'm waiting on the body shims which are on backorder from Paragon.

I will post an update as soon as they arrive.

Hope everybody had a good 4th. weekend.

Heading to the Reds/Phils game.
