OK, I screwed up. I replced the vacuum advance on my 72, and when I did, I took the points off to make it easier, and now I can't get the car to start.
Any idea's? I'm a beginer, so be gentle - I'm perfectly happy just getting it running so U can take it to a pro!
Or...did you put the rotor in 180 degrees out of position? The under-side of the rotor has a round protrusion on one side and a square protrusion on the other. These assure proper indexing of the rotor. Did you reconnect the two wires to the clip on the points? (signal lead and condenser wire) Is the dist. cap mounted correctly?
Can we assume you didn't move the distributor and that you didn't remove any plug wires from the cap? If the above suggestions from other forum members don't work, check where the wires connecting to the points. Are they secure, is is possible the wire from the points to the coil is frayed or broken? A continuity tester could confirm. Did you seat the points securely? If I remember correctly they seat into the plate before they are secured with the two screws. If everything checks out, could it be flooded? To confirm no spark, pull the wire from the coil to the cap and holding a half inch away from the center post on the cap, crank and see if your getting spark.

This is the same thing I was thinking.
To set the gap on the points, the rub block(for lack of a better term) has to be on the high point of the distributor rotor. Then set the gap like Paul74 suggested.
last time i set point i just hooked up the dwell meter, lifted the trap door on the cap and started cranking the motor while watching the meter. turn adjusting bolt accordingly.
Also, make sure the wire to the points or the condenser isn't grounding out on the base plate.
I think you might have nailed it. I'll try in the morning -but I'm pretty sure that when I put everything back in - I connected the condenser to the points upside down (to mack a better connection) but this would put the connector in contact with the plate and ground it! I wasn't thinging about what the condenser did - I just knew I needed to make the connection!
