I had a similar pair on a 69 Camaro for about 20 minutes. I sent them back to Mario Andretti directly with a note stating that I couldn't believe how crummy they sounded. Like deer farts through a pillow.
Went with Dynomax Super Turbos instead. MUUUCH better. I'll never use anything else. They have the deep muscle car tone and don't wake the dead when cruising (like Flowmaster).

thought mine would be louder then they are but they definately sound good nice and mellow i dont announce im coming down the road 5 miles ahead of time.
wanted 2.5 out also..may look at Hooker areochambers. Anyone hear those?
I bought and installed Magnaflow satin Stainless 2 1/2 center in and 2 1/2 center out. Welded the TIPs so they look symmetrical coming out the center of each muffler. i get compliments and inquiries from C3'rs on them a lot! ...and they sound awesome..
They sounds great!,maybe too loud?,If you add an x-pipe behind crossmember you got a totally difference sound and reduce db a little!.
I think you got a very nice 383cui engine in your car

Thanks!
I am going to have a h-pipe installed soon.
Going to your original question, it depends on which kit from Magnaflow you get. There is one that's not mandrel bent and I think that starts at 2.5" and ends in 2" and then there is the one I have which is mandrel bent and 2.5" all the way through. (see my pics)
I was a little disappointed at first with how quiet the exhaust is at idle, but the more I get on the throttle, the more I like. Freeway speeds are music to my ears (even at 2800 rpms). And as stated, you stomp on it... Oh baby!
I've recently acquired a set of Turbo Cherry Bombs. My car currently has Flowmaster 40 Series on them. Engine is a 355, mild build (intake and cam). Anyone know what the difference in sound is? My car has run, but only to load into a trailer as the carb is crap and the brakes are almost non-existent.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
I've had many mufflers on mine and the MagnaFlows sound the best to me. Just get the universal fit in any size or configuration of inlet / outlet you want and take them to a muffler shop. I run 3" in and out and they are great
