Default Steeroids Or Vb&p Rack attack?

I want to convert to rack and pinion rather then fix my power steering. I am on the fence though between the two kits Rack attack or Steeroids. I heard they are the same thing is this true? Also they claim the kits have everything you need is this true or will I need anything else?

VB is having a sale right now. Check them out to see if the Rack attack is included in the sale.

They are basically the same. Steeriods was first to market but neither company invented the rack and pinion conversion. There are several members here including myself who have done their own conversions for pennies on the dollar compared to the kits. You have to have fab skills and a welder though.

I've heard that the welding on the kits can be a bit questionable, brackets welded only on one side etc. Also the materials used were said to be a bit flimsy. There is great forces at work when you turn the wheels while standing still. You can see the brackets twisting. So I would not be surprised if the welds would crack open over time. At least checking them every now and then would be a good idea.

I too have a DIY version made out of thicker gauge materials and with good welds. A friend of mine made the brackets and gathered all the necessary parts, not too complicated. Works great.

I went with the Rack Attack kit. I don't have the time or ability to make a diy kit. Will let the forum know how it is once all is said and done

I just installed a Steeroids kit in my 76. The system went in with no problems except for header clearance on one of the pipes on the drivers side. Had to put a dent in it to clear the linkage. Other than that, it went in real easy. The brackets look and feel quite substantial.

Default About to make the purchase

Hi All,

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I am wondering if anyone has any up to date info. on the Steeroids and Rack Attack kits? Positive or negative comments would be appreciated.

I am close to making a decision on one of these kits but would like to make the correct decision on which system to buy as I would only like to modify the steering once.

Thanks

Ive got the Rack Attack and had it on the car for 1 year now.
So far absolutely zero issues with it. Still have some slight bump steer with a fully rebuilt suspension, so I suppose that would be my only complaint.

Its definitely tighter than the OEM steering ever was, which I had no real complaints over.

The Steeroids kit has slightly nicer tie rods and has adjustable rod ends. Im not sure about the long term street usage of those type of rod ends. The VBP kit has steel heavy duty tie rods and standard tie rod ends on the outer side of the tie rods. Should be no issues with that set-up for years to come.

The brackets are nice with the improved bracketry set-up over the early Steeroids kits, which is the same as what the Steeroids kits now offer. No issues with the brackets so far.

At this point, I'd say its a wash between the two so go on pricing-sales events to get your when your ready.

I agree with the above. I have installed 2 Steeroids kit and 1 VB Rack Attack. The only difference is the tie rod ends. Either one will work fine and whichever has the best price right now is the one I would get. Mine has been working quite well for 2 years so far.

I have had my Steeroids installed for a couple of years now and have been well pleased with it. I was really impressed with the way the car responds to steering input versus the stock steering system.

EDIT: Looks like I have had my steeroids for a little over 4 years. Longer than I thought. BTW, Steeroids is on sale right now. See the sticky at the top of the page.

Default Thanks for the replies

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your replies to the question of Steeroids or Rack Attack. Sounds like it's pretty much a wash as to which system to use. It will all come down to which offers the best price at purchase time.

This forum is GREAT!!!!

From the picture it looks like you may have a Heim Adujustable Tie Rod Adapter Stud to deal with bump steer. Did this come with the Steeroids or was this added by you?

Thanks
Ken

That adjustable hiem tie rod end is included in the Steeroids kit, whereas the VBP Rack Attack has a standard tie rod end on the outer connection in place of that adjustable unit.

VBP Rack Attack tie rod
