Default How long can I run open headers?

I have just rebuilt the whole rear suspension on my car, and in the process cut out the old exhaust and replaced the stock exhaust manifold with some hedman headers. The only problem is that the exhaust shop is about 10 miles away, and the alignment place is less than 5. Which should I do first, if I can go that far without causing any type of damage. That is also if I can make it that far without getting pulled over....

Until you run across a 'road agent' that has a hard on for noise and Vettes. Until then, make sure your legal with the exception of the exhaust....

if you baby it the noise shouldn't be severe. it gets really loud when you accelerate.

I'd do it.

I drove 10 miles to an exhaust shop with open headers during peak morning traffic....

Got lots of looks of from the aged motorists,
and lots of from the motoring enthusiasts...

As said above... refrain from WOT bursts to keep the rozzers at bay.
You are, after all, going straight to an exhaust shop to rectify the situation. Get the officer to follow you if he doesn't believe you!

Go for it!

its not going to hurt the engine.
floor might get a bit warm though since the headers are going to open up right by your feet

Run slowly and most important, baby the gas pedal...
Hot floor near your feet is predictible, but nothing to worry about if you're only 10 miles from the shop.
I would try it

Time it so that you won't have much traffic. Sitting at idle with open headers under the car isn't the best thing for it (heat, exhaust fumes, etc.). The distance is not the problem here...noise and safety are the concerns.

If you still have the mufflers you cut off, as a quick fix, you could trim the pipe on the input and output and clamp the muffs directly to the collectors. The 'peace' of mind might be worth the cost of a set of collectors if the clamps render them unreusable again .

Call your local DMV tell them what your doing. Remember the person you talked to as they suposed to make a record of it. that way if you get blue lighted you have proof that you have permission to do so. thats the way we cover our *** here in south carolina..As for as the heat, keep the car moving as much as possible heat wont be a problem unless you wind up in really bad traffic

This is a non issue.I have a66 with headers with cutouts at the collectors that I have been driving open for two years. It's only loud at wot, the rest of the time it's music.

Its been proven on the dyno many times,A good well thought out exaust is better than none at all. This is really non relative to the thread but informal.Never seen a use for cutouts.

i am no expert but if that were the case then wouldnt these flame spitting top fuel dragsters who search for every single pony they can squeeze out of an engine want a full exhaust system as well.

now i know its been proven that too small of a system chokes an engine and too large of a system causes the gases to cool down and therefore slow down so that the engine has to work harder to force the gas out.

Running open headers is a problem at much of any speed with FIBERGLASS FLOORING with metal, it's not all THAT bad....raw flames come out of the headers at decent power levels....you seen drag cars at night....headers get hot enough to glow orange and maybe even yellow but seen at night only, not in daytime....to my own amazement....

so to get there, take what if left of the old system or get some lengths at a parts house and cobble up something, take some sheetmetal and hose clamps to the joints, surely it will leak, but stay well enough of done decently and the pipes supported....

I have done this many times to and from but it's only 3 miles one way for me....through traffic and in the hood....

Go google scavenging. open headers disrups this effect on the exhaust port therefore effecting exhaust flow.I guess u need to see nascar about there open headers also
