Has any one done the 700R4 outo gearbox swap into a 1978 C3 Corvette ,was it worth it or will it better to upgrade the TH350 with stall converter
Regards

Neither one, the tranny you want is a 200 4r, with the lockup overdrive.....it's a bolt in for a thm350....need hook up the TC lockup wiring, but that's easy.....
I personally am not a fan of the 200r4 (with respect shown, they make different options because ppl have different opinions and favs). first i dont find they're as easy to find second i find it easier to build up a 700 and i like the gearing on the 700. i did do a 700 swap in my vette and yes it was WELL worth it. the trick is not to get a stock one or a rebuild of an earlier one. the early ones 82-85 were not as strong of a tranny. the 700 is no beast in stock form, but built right i think its the perfect overdrive tranny. i really needed something to help because im running 4.10s. i also have the b&m lockup kit for the converter, i used the crossmember from bowtie overdrives, everything bolted up beautifully. you would also need to remove three inches from your driveshaft ( the difference between the two tranny's ). good luck with what ever you decide, there are plenty of options with tranny swaps each to fit what different people prefer. if you need anything pertaining to the 700 swap just pm me and ill help all i can.
It look that the 200-R4 mount is +_ 6 inch aft of the original Th350 mount ,is the 200-R4 stronger than the 700R4

The 200 sets right on the cross support, remove any forward/bolted on mounting shoes....I modded the muncie shoe to fit the 700, but the 200 you just remove it....
you may have to elongate the mounting holes to the rear a tad, but you MAY have a location choice on that support... with your car being automatic, mine was welded in....
i just did a 200 4r swap on my 75 and it was a simple bolt in. the mount fit with no problems. i bolted it to the crossmember and lifted it up into place. i like the gearing in the 200 better than the 700. the 700 has a lower first gear but that translates to a very wide 1 to 2 shift. the 200 is spaced more evenly and the overdrive is a little better. meaning lower rpms at cruise than the 700. you can have a 200 4r built to handle quite a bit of power.
nope, my stock crossmember slid right into place with the trans attached. i am using my stock driveshaft with a custom yoke. a corvette th350 yoke will work though. bto sells them. i have 1390 u joints so i had to go with a yoke from riverside gear to work with my set up but if you are staying stock all you need is a tv cable and 4 speed shifter. the bto tv made easy system is a great set up.
