Default does 68-72 vettes have solid or rubber body mounts?

I was wondering if 68-72 have solid spacers or rubber, and if they are solid, can they be changed to rubber? also, how do you get the spacer out located
in the kick panels, isn't it sandwiched under the body and between the frame?

Thanks

Solid. I guess they could be replaced with rubber. The body would sit slightly higher (about 3/8"). Don't know if this would cause any problems.

Spoke,

68-73(?) I believe came with donut shaped aluminum body mounts. Yes, very easily you can change to rubber as several restorers do to soften up the ride.

The number '2' body mount is located inside of the kick panels down by the pass/driver's feet. Easy access when pnel is removed. Remove the bolt, and the mount wll be accessible under the frame, on the outside of the car.

HEY TOPLESS68:

Is it hidden behind the rocker panel trim plate?

No. Mount #2 is found in the interior behind the foot kick panel down by your feet.

Removing the kick panel only provides access to the bolt that runs through the mount. The bolt runs thru the body, then the mount, and bolts to the frame cage nut. The mount is only seen or accessible if the body is lifted off the frame.

If you have an AIM it will detail the setting. If not, any Eckler's or CC catalog has a drawing of the bolt and mount.

One last detail......#2 mounts are found on roadster's only. Hope I didn't confuse.

So you have to lift the body up to replace that rubber mount ? theres got to be another way! I hope! Also how hard is it to replace the metal cage which is rivited on under and in back of the rear tires, that in between the mount and body?

Thanks Spoke-

I did my 68 about 25 years ago. Back then the idea was that it would help reduce the spider cracking especially if you were running steel belted radial tires. I installed the rubber mounts one at a time by first taking all the mounting bolts and the flex steering joint loose, then jacking my roadster up in key spots with plyboard to spread the weight out. There was an article back then in either car and driver, motor trend, or one of the good old periodicals describing how to do it. Someday I will do the same to my 72, it did help the ride.

73 was the first year to have rubber body mounts. Chevy put these mounts on a test mule 72 with no problems to see how they worked... results were great as reported. Time consuming but not hard to do. Good luck.
