Default Blower door open should it be?????

When does the blower flap open or close. 79 L-82 with my hood open if you look on the passenger side at the end of the wiper valley I can see my blower cage, the flap stays open no matter what adjustments I make at the a/c heater controls. I also have no air coming out of my a/c vents either. checked the vacuum line seems to be ok. What would happen if i permanently closed that flap?

Appreciate your help

You would get no outside air into the cabin....and that's NOT a good thing.

The "Outside Air" damper door is supposed to be 'open' on all settings except at the "OFF" AND "A/C-MAX" settings...and when the car is not running, of course. Check the door with the car not running. If it is closed, you are (apparently) getting a vacuum signal sent to that O.A. damper servo at all times, so the seal inside the A/C-Heater control head vacuum manifold is probably bad. If the door is 'open' with engine off, your servo and/or damper door is frozen in the 'open' position. Try shooting some PB BLaster into appropriate areas to see if you can free it {before you dig in deep}.

If that is all that is wrong with the system, there is little loss: the A/C-MAX setting would act just like the regular A/C setting; and the door being open when engine is OFF would allow dirt/debris to enter when the car is parked. If it is garaged, that's no 'biggie', either.

The "no air out of any outlet" issue is very significant. That symptom points to the control head manifold seal issue OR that you are not even receiving a vacuum signal at the control head. The feed line to the control head is the solid-black vacuum line. Check to see that you always have vacuum on that line when the engine is running.

Thanks, Its garage kept, I will spray it with blaster in place if I need to I'll pull it and spray it well. The outlet problem, where is the control head manifold located? What does it look like? what should I look for on a seal leak?

Thanks again 7T1vette:

The vacuum distribution manifold is attached to the left side of the heater control head...inside the lower shift console. You get to it by removing the cover plate at the top. If you want to dig into it, you really need the A.I.M. (assembly instruction manual) for your year car. Check for vacuum on the black line coming into the lower console before you do any major disassembly. It could even be that the check valve on the line coming from the intake manifold is screwed up. Do the headlights and wiper cover work? Do any of the heater/vent settings work?

Thanks again: Yes everything works except the O.A. damper and air through the outlets.
The A/C needs recharging but the comp. works. I bought the car a year ago and these are the only things that didn't work. I did minor upgrades ( tires, shocks, mono spring, aligment,)

Appreciate your replies.

Also w/ the control at A/C Max (which is the recirculation position), the damper door inside the psgr side kickpanel vent should open. That allows the blower to suck air from the psgr compartment. That's why the one you see at the end of the wiper cowl should close to prevent outside air from entering. Good luck on fixing and recharging.
