On my 71 the ground connection is made with a screw into the hinge pillar at the small round hole to the left the brace and the 2 oblong holes.
Guessing that your 68 is the same, as Pete indicated.

I agree with the above posts but will add once the wire gets to the center cluster it will be the black wire on the 3 wire temp gauge connector. If your doing testing the temp gauge 3 wire must be in place for a solid ground. Yes the console has a ground wire but if you don't have the 2 studs attached under the radio that holds the console to the center cluster you wont have a good ground.
If you look at the center spade on the temp gauge you will see the spade is attached directly to the metal housing. That is the ground for the housing.
You will also note the black wire is a heavier 14 gauge wire.
