Default Vacuum Issue

I have a monster camshaft in my vette. I only have 10 Lbs of vacuum. It should be at least 18 lbs. Has anyone had this problem and what did you install to run all the vacuums in the car? I was thinking of buying the SSBC electric vacuum pump. Has anyone tried this and can it run the brakes plus the rest of the vacuum operated features of this car?

Hi Tonac, I did forget to mention something. I teed into the vacuum tank and ran a line to the brake booster. There is no vacuum coming from that line. When I cut the Vacuum Line from the tank to the line going back to the inside of the car I nipped a blue plastic cap that was inside the vacuum line itself.. I am not sure if that piece had a small hole in it or not but I sliced the tip of it off. I think its a cap or a reducer of some kind. Have you ever seen this peice? I thought by teeing into that line the vacuum pressure would store up and have plenty of vacuum for the brake booster. Do you know why it is not working? Is it the blue cap I may have damaged or The vacuum tank on this 75 vette is not ment for using as a brake source for vacuum? Also the headlights are not working, they do not come up. Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can't run the vacuum booster off the headlight/wiper door vacuum line. It is not large enough to support the needs of the brake booster. The brake booster should be fed from a direct [and dedicated] line from the manifold or the carb plate which is mounted to the intake manifold. The other 'system' line needs to have a vacuum reservoir to stabilize the system properly. If you route the booster properly...and you still have the vacuum tank in the system, your vacuum circuits should work fine. And, you will likely find that you have more manifold vacuum than you thought.

P.S. 16-21" Hg is vacuum level for stock production engines; and the vacuum operated components will function on as little as 10" Hg, if the system has no leaks.

Thanks! I will give that a try today. Looks like I will be putting the Vacuum lines back to their original routing. I just thought with the cam I was running why buy a vacuum tank/pump for the brakes if there is already one in the car.
