Default 79 Gauges

I have a friend who resently bought a 1979 that had been stored for more then 10 years. There were a lot of wiring issues which we resolved. One problem that has come up is when he turns on the headlight or parking lights the gauges all quit working. He replaced the switch with a new one but the problem is still there. I am an electrician and can follow all the prints so if anyone has a suggestion can you respond. I haven't had a chance to review the prints yet but will be going to his shop in the next day or so. Any suggestion where to start would be great.

Thanks 70 Vetteman

You will have to follow the print. Off hand I can't think of why it would do that. Somehow the gray wire for backlighting and the pink for ignition power are working against themselves.

Default 79 Guages

Just an update. After going over to the shop, the gauges were actually being deflected backwards not just to zero. After removing the fuse for the dash lights everything was fine. The gauges now all work with the headlights and parking lights on as it had nothing to do with that circuit which also proved it was not the switch. Somewhere in the dash light circuits there must be corrosion or a short that is reversing the voltage to the guages causing them to deflect backwards. I will update again once we get to the root of the problem. At least it is now driveable just hard to see the guages at night.

The console gauges & lighting have a printed circuit w/ a connector which has the wiring to it- very easy to have an isssue at the connection.

The factory radio probably also had a gray lighting wire so if the radio was changed ...
