Default Master Cylinder Mounting Gasket?

I have 70 car that has "mushy" brakes. I am going to bleed the brakes, rebuild the master cylinder with the rebuild kit, and reinstall the MC.

There is some leaking on the firewall from the MC, which is the reason I will be rebuilding it with this kit:

http://www.amazon.com/Raybestos-MK47.../dp/B000CP8P14

My question is do I need a new Mounting Gasket? Unfortunately, all the local stores don't carry the $3 part, and my only alternative would be to pay Ecklers $12 for it and have to wait for it to come.

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...3&dept_id=1074

Final question, besides the casting number on the passenger side and the 2 letter code indicating non power brakes, is there a date code on the MC?

Thanks

it does not seal against fluid, you have a leak from a inner seal which will go away when you rebuild / replace MC. You can buy gasket material at Autozone and other stores and make you own if you don't want to wait. I understand about the shipping, I just paid Ecklers $12.00 to ship two $3.99 hood spring bumpers (no one else has them local).

I believe you can substitute a standard thermostat gasket for the MC gasket,
Not perfect but close enough. 69VETT

Hi S,
There was a TINY Julian date stamped in the machined area for the front brake line fitting. 0338 on my mid- January built 71.
The area looks black in this picture, but is unpainted since it was machined after the m/c was painted.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks to everyone. I guess my plan will be to reuse the existing gasket if possible, if not I will see if I can get a thermostat gasket locally.

Finally, how do you decipher a four digit Julian date?

Thanks again.

OK, just checked my date code.

0 40

Am I right to assume it is Feb 9 1970 (40th day of '70)?

There are only three digits, but there is a space between 0 and 40.

Buy the new gasket material at local parts store and use the old gasket as a template to make a new one. A pencil, X-acto knife, and scissors are all you need. Use no sealant on the new one. Save the excess material for the next gasket you can't buy locally.

Hi SB,
You read the Julian date correctly. That date would work for any car built with-in 6 months AFTER it. The 6 month window is what is usually accepted.

Alan
