Hello i have an problem whit my axel shaft.I have 2 axel shaft that have been broken this summer fore me.I have 20" wheel whit street tyres 255x35x20".And some times i have got that the rear wheel have been bumping so the hole car have been shaking.Could that bee the problem that do that my axel shaft brokes?I have an 6 speed Richmond rod geerbox whit my 383cui engine on about 475hp,and i think that the axel shaft should hold fore that. Are this axel shaft( http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...dept%5Fid=1866 ) thicker around the U-joints or are they the same like the standard axel shaft? Here you cane see wher my shaft get broken
Anytime you get wheel hop or the rear tires bouncing while on the throttle it can be a problem. You are constantly loading and unloading the half shaft. I put in a set of 3 inch half shafts with solid ujoints from a supplier. They have been pretty bullit proof and I have about the same HP and setup as you.
Those from Ecklers are similar to mine but I paid about that price for 2 of them. This was a few years ago but that seems a little steep on price.
You need to do some work on the rear suspension to make it more stable. With the amount of money you have already invested in the engine, a little more to put that power to the road smoothly will be worth the expense. Besides, you're spending more than you planned for half-shafts. It would be a good idea to buy some stronger shafts/end yokes, and maybe some safety straps around those shafts.
VB&p makes a single mount traction bar that mounts under the center of your rear spring. Highly effective at eliminating wheel hop. Make sure you use solid spicer U joints with no zirks. The 3" halfshafts will work much better than the stockers.
Clutch finesse will be important. but eliminating wheel hop will go along ways in reducing breakage.

Gordon,
That would make a great poster on the wall of my shop! A undercarriage we would all love to see when looking at our vettes!
Just fantastic! Wow does not do it justice in the least.

Thanks for posting that pic.

Unfortunatly that is not my car. Mine is close to this but this is spotless. I have to give 73jst4fun the credit on this. We were installing something on his car and had it on my lift and snapped a few pictures. He does win quite a few awards with it. Even as clean as it is the car runs hard and is driven, obviously not in the rain though.
