I just posted about my starter on another thread. I have just replaced my starter and have had problems with my car starting still. It would click when I would turn the key everyonce and awail. But now it's not starting t all and just clicking everytime I turn the key.
I just drove it about an hour ago. Went parked in a lot got in
it and cranked it. I did have to try it twice it just clicked the first time, but I got it the secound time and it started right up. Drove it home got in the dive way and parked it again. But when I went back to get in it to pull it in my driveway this time I wasn't so lucky it never even turned over it just clicks??? That's it?? Some people on the forum have already said that maybe it was dirty connection, or battery. I know it's not the batt. And if it were a dirty connection then it would eventually crank I feel like.
Does it do it only when the engine is hot? If it only has a problem when hot, you might need a heat shield for the starter.
What size battery (Cold Cranking Amps)? If the battery is too small it could have trouble starting when hot.
I think you either have the problem "attfay elleybay" is alluding to, or you have a loose grounding wire somewhere. I had a triumph where sometime i would go to turn the key and the car would start right up, other times i would go to tur it and it would click, sometimes nothing at all would happen. Issue ended up being a grounding wire that was poorly secured, so sometimes it made contact to ground and other times it didnt. Just my experience
I had the same trouble with mine....got progressively worse. Found out it was the connection at the battery. There was corrosion inside the connectors at the terminals. Replaced the ends and haven't had a problem since. It's worth checking, eventually it got bad enough that i noticed a spark at the terminal which is how I found it.
I had the same problem on my 79. It was a red wire coming up from the solenoid by the passenger side fire wall. The connection was loose at a connector. Recrimped the wire and all is fine. It would only happen once in a while.
Get the car Jacked up. good? Ok look @ starter. 1 big wire 1 smaller wire. bigger wire hot@all times, little wire is a trigger for solenoid. Now lets look at the bigger wire, sometimes, and not to often corrosion will creep into that wire. You will still get a good contact, but when the starter calls for juice from the batt the cable wont pass enough amperage to the startor motor to turn it. Since you just replaced the starter thats where I would start.
