I watched a original 73 ralley with original old tire on the German E-bay and it went for 75 Euros only. It appeared that the buyer was more interested in the date stamped rim . Expect around 100 USD or so.
So, if you want to sell your 68, make sure you mention the date code of the rim.
I think it has tremendous value---to someone who is doing a NCRS/Bloomington restoration.
I found my original ('69 roadster) spare rally and spare tire in the tub a month or so ago. I immediately removed them, took pictures of the ink marks on the tire and the treads (unused) and date stampings on the wheel, and put them away. I replaced it with a used rally and a new radial, just in case of a flat.
I've seen these on various auction sites for more than $500.00. Obviously, if a guy is trying to round up correct parts for a '68 or '69 resto, he'll pay up for the wheel and especially the tire. He needs 5 original tires, but only 1 original wheel. All the tires are judged, but only the spare wheel is date-checked.
Although these tires really suck, guys out there want them to complete their restoration. Then they just take them off after judging and pop on some drivable tires.
I have debated whether I'll sell mine or just hold on to them. My car is largely original (all the rallys are original, I took the original beauty rings off and put them away to protect them and replaced them with stainless steel repros) so I sort of hate to break up the set of 5 wheels. I wouldn't sell the original wheel and spare for cheap.
Still have the original very early 68 white stripe tire + rim, completely unused. Never installed.
Just keeping it for nostalgic reasons, but I guess for 500 I would let it go.
